The Exception

The Exception | 2017 Merlot
1 x Gold Medal
92 Points

This Merlot is a vibrant youthful purple in colour with hues of a deep inky red. On the nose, aromas of vanilla and oak spice, ripe plum and fruit cake shine. The palate is rich, soft and generous with lovely oak tannins that pleasantly linger. Drink now or cellar for 5-12 years.

Pair with seared eye fillet with garlic and herb potatoes.

Wine Making

The 2017 vintage was much colder and later than what is usually expected in the Strathbogie Ranges. Merlot is a relatively early ripening red wine grape, however the cool 2017 vintage allowed the grapes to have about one month longer hang time on the vine, and with this came exceptional flavour and colour development.
We hand plunged a small parcel of this Merlot and decided that the intense flavour and colour would develop well in 100% new Shenendoah American oak barrels. This wine was matured for 16 months in 100% new American oak barrels.
