Fowles Wine awarded $500,000 for groundbreaking ‘BatNav’ project

Big news for Biodiversity: Fowles Wine awarded $500,000 for groundbreaking ‘BatNav’ project

We’re thrilled to share some incredible news with our Fowles followers!

As many of you know, earlier this year we were honoured to be nominated for Farmer of the Year in recognition of our ongoing work in biodiversity – particularly our research into how microbats can support natural pest control in the vineyard.

Fast forward a few months, and that work has just been given a massive boost.  We’re proud to announce that Fowles Wine has been awarded $500,000 from the Coles Nurture Fund to bring an Australian-first idea to life: BatNavs!

What are BatNavs?

BatNavs are an innovative technology designed to help microbats navigate the vineyard more effectively and feed on pests – reducing the need for pesticides.

It’s a project that reflects what we stand for at Fowles: finding smart, sustainable ways to farm in harmony with nature.  As Matt Fowles said recently “We live by the idea of farming in nature’s image – working with nature, not against it.  Supporting microbats as a natural pest control solution is a perfect example of that ethos.”

Big Potential for the Wine Industry

While the BatNav project is being developed right here at Fowles, the benefits could extend far beyond our vineyard.  Research suggests that better harnessing the power of microbats could save the Australian wine industry an estimated $50 million per year in pesticides, reduce environmental impact and contribute to better, more naturally crafted wines for everyone to enjoy.

What’s Next?

We’re already assembling a dedicated project team to develop the BatNav technology and we’ll be sure to keep you updated as things progress over the next 12 months.

A huge shout-out to Glenn Chisholm and our incredible vineyard crew – their passion, curiosity and support have been instrumental in getting this project off the ground.  We couldn’t do it without you!

Stay tuned for more updates and thanks to everyone who continues to support our mission to blend great wine with great environmental outcomes.r.
