Farm to Table Sangiovese
Sangiovese (san-joe-VAE-sae), renowned as Italy’s most widely planted grape variety, originated in the rolling hills of Tuscany and has long been celebrated for its versatility and ability to produce wines that are both refined and food-friendly. In our Strathbogie Ranges vineyard, this grape finds a unique environment that allows it to thrive, producing wines with bright acidity, an elegant structure, and delightful cherry notes. The cool-climate and high-altitude terroir of this rugged landscape enable Sangiovese to fully express itself, capturing the essence of its Italian roots while embracing the distinct nuances of the landscape.
At Fowles Wine, our Farm to Table Sangiovese is crafted with meticulous care. The grapes for this vintage were harvested from block 13 of our Upton Run vineyard, using a selective process harvester on the last day of April 2021— a full month later than the previous vintage. This late harvest allowed the grapes to reach optimal ripeness, contributing to the wine’s vibrant flavour profile. After a gentle crushing, the juice was fermented in stainless steel to maximise colour and preserve the primary fruit flavours and aromas. The wine was then matured for nine months in a combination of old French (50%) and American (50%) oak, creating a harmonious balance of vanilla and oak spice.
The result is a vibrant cherry-red wine with dark cherry, floral, and herbaceous notes, accented by hints of violet and rose petals. On the palate, you’ll find intense dark cherry flavours with subtle hints of plum. This medium-bodied wine offers dusty tannins, a touch of spice on the finish, and impressive length, making it an ideal pairing for a variety of dishes.
