Farming Through Winter

July Lambing

At Fowles, we’re all about winemaking, but what you may not realize is that we are also very passionate sheep farmers. Winter is a lovely time in the vineyard, where everything is quiet and we take the time to recharge. This is also the busiest time of the year on the farm, with lambs being born all over the place.

David Fowles is the head of our sheep enterprise, working closely with Farm Manager Ed Mercer to ensure that all of our 7,000 breeding ewes are well looked after in the lead up to lambing. The boys on the farm then make sure that the nearly 10,000 lambs born each year get all the nutrition they need, along with shelter in the cooler months.

We just got our hands on one of the first electric Polaris XP Kinetic all-terrain vehicles! This game-changer is not only eco-friendly but also a powerhouse for all our farm tasks. One of the fun things to do on the farm is the sheep rounds. This involves jumping in the new Polaris and spending the next few hours, freezing cold, but full of elation as you cruise around the farm making sure the lambs are safe and not separated from their mothers.

Seasonal Farm Work

The focus of winter on the farm is looking after our lambs, but it is also a time for prepping the farm and the vineyard for spring. This winter, we have planted thousands of plants in our insectariums to promote insect life, and have sewn hundreds of rows in the vineyard with mid-row cover crops to promote soil health and biodiversity.
